Mr. Pitts and Williams,

To obtain a holistic view of the naming of Tennessee units you almost have to read the entire "Tennesseans in the Civil War, Part 1."

Mr. Pitts, you are correct in your statement that the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office issued the numerical number BUT... there are a thousand stories in the naked city and a lot of factors impacted the numbering, precidence, politics, poor administration, lost records, etc., etc., etc.

For example, you can go to the online version of "Tennesseans in the Civil War, Part 1" and read (as a start) about the two 2nd Tennessee Cavalry's (Ashby's and Smith's) then that will lead you to the mess with the two 22nd Tennessee Cavalry's (Barteau's and Nixon's). Those are just some examples with different circumstances. Below is the link.

To me it still is not as the state of Georgia's stuff can be and I am by no means a novice at this.
