Re: Confederate dead at Murphreesboro

In researching a family memeber I to was confused about the burial of several soldiers of the SC 10th Infantry Co H that were wounded at the Battle of Stones River. I thought these wounded men fit the timetable of the wounded who left for Chattanooga and each died before Watkins listed names. Some of the 10th SC are in fact on Watkins list. Others were left in Murfreesboro prison field hosp. So they must have separated because there was so many wounded. My reason.
I found a letter which proves you are correct Mr Pitts.
In a geneology libray in SC is a letter from Sgt Solomon William McClam to his father. I quote portions of the letter about Murfreesboro.
10 March 1863:
" I believe the health of our regiment is generally very good. I have no news to to write to you at present only I so much regret to inform you that Capt Nettles is dead. He died at Murfreesboro about 4 weeks ago. He died of wounds inflicted upon him at the battle of that place. One of our doctors which was left at Murfreesboro to attend to the wounded got back yesterday evening. He brought a letter to Lt. Lee from M H Scott stating that Capt J R Nettles Reuben W Kirby, Corp Godwin and J M Matthews were all dead and G W Huggins was all of our wounded men left there yet living." He stated that Huggins was mending and that he thought that he would be able to leave there in about three weeks. I was very sorry to hear of the death of Capt Nettles but our finest men are the most apt to get killed in battle.'
So, Capt John R Nettles 24 and Reuben Whitfield Kirby 18 (died 23 January 1863),S.R F Godwin and J M Matthews are SC dead buried at Evergreen as unknowns. As for GW Huggins who was released from prison in Murfreesboro and Solomon William McClam author of the letter both of these young men were killed at The Battle of Atlanta.
