Thanks. In particular, I meant the Federal operations in Nashville, which were on a much more impressive scale than anything the Confederates had there earlier. The Union army built several rather large industrial conplexes near the Nashville and Chattanooga depot, up the Franklin Pike and a couple of other places in the city. Something like 4,000 to 5,000 worked there on the eve of the battle of Nashville, many recruited from Northern cities. A like number worked at various places outside the city. This without even adding the thousands of freedmen employed in these works.
