If you care to compare notes with someone like myself attempting to piece together a father's service in WWII, you may discover that military records for the Civil War are much, much easier to find.

As for your other question, I'm reasonably sure that a government contractor provided the materials.

Here's a history of Day's 12th Cavalry Battalion. Similar histories are available for all Tennessee units.
