Re: battle names (moved from VACWMB)

Gerald, my area of research has been mostly confined to my paternal great-grandfathers Roberts & Chaddick who served in the 7th Mississippi so if this is a little obvious and I'm missing it just bear with me.

The name "Shiloh" is listed as a battle honor on the 7th Mississippi's regimental flag. In post-war letters I have seen my great-grandfather Roberts use the name "Shiloh".

Does this mean the Confederate command and the rank and file had two different names for the battle themselves. Is it maybe that Pittsburgh Landing was only used officially but the name Shiloh was still the most common name for it.

Thanks for the help.
