The Memphis newspapers, which were among the first reporting on the battle, called it "Shiloh" and sometimes spelled it "Shiloah." Memphis is where many of the Confederate casualties were sent to hospitals, and would be one of the best places to have known the correct Confederate name of the battle. Remember, at this time Memphis was still an unconquered Confederate city.
