Many of the Franklin Co. area soldiers "deserted" around that time period. The Yankees had come through the area during the summer of 1863 and ravaged it so that many soldiers had to return home to try to feed/take care of their families. It wasn't desertion as in cowardly, gave up the cause, etc. I have a 3rd grgrandfather who did the same thing.
