Re: J/Jacob Low/Lowe
According to the scott county in the civil war, compiled by Paul Roy for the Scott County Historical Society, Jacob Lowe, born abt 1828 anderson cty, tn. residing in Maggie, NC. as of 1900 census age 72 with wife nancy r lowe, gives witness to a widow pensioners questionairre, filled out 8/28/1908, for a widows indigent pension (Caroline Shoopman) that Joseph Shoopman had been a member of his company and regiment for abt 2 years before he joined the outfit. Lowe states Shoopman was taken prisoner "at a place near Shelbyville. I do not remember the date." Low states his company surrendered in Haywood county, NC. and that "We disbanded about 20 days after Lee surrendered" Caroline Shoopman was approved as a pensioner on 2/15/1909. (taken from soldier's pension record obtained from the TSLA in Nashville, Tn. by Barbara Blankenship, Knoxville, Tn. In a letter from the Adjutant Generals office in the war dept in washington, D.C. Joseph Shoopman is said to have served co. B 19th Tn. Inf. then transferred to the 5th Tn. cavalry CSA. Also pvt. co. H 2nd Tn. cavalry CSA, captured at farmington, Tn. 10/7/1863. Confined at camp Morton, Indiana, 10/16/1863. Transferred to point lookout, md. for exchange 2/19/1965.
From Lowes witness it sounds like he may have been in the 8th tn cav.(the surrender at haywood and the disbanding shortly after hearing of Lee's surrender. Lowe may heve stayed in Haywood, NC., Where the 8th surrendered to avoid prosecution in scott county, tn. for treason. These men were 1st cousins and my relatives, I just want Jacob to be recognized if he was really with the CSA
