Hi- I've just been mapping my G.G.Granduncle's travels during the War, following an obituary. Your site is the first reference to Battle Creek (other than B.C., Alabama, which wouldn't be relevant) that I found. Was there actually a battle at Battle Creek?

I'd send a copy of the obit, once I figure out how. If you don't mind, I'll summarize: John T VanKeuren enlisted 6/12/61 in 1st Michigan Engineers. Served under General Thomas in Kentucky, and was at Lebanon (bivouac in Kent., or skirmish w/ John H. Morgan @ L., Tenn.?), and Mill Springs. Marched to Nashville, arriving 3/7/62; was hospital steward four months. Was commissioned 2nd Lt., 5th Tennessee Cavalry 7/10/62. Battle of Stone(s) River 12/26/62. One or two engagements per day for 11 consecutive days. Shelbyville 6/26/63. At Guy's Gap. W/ Gordon Granger at Tullahoma, Hollowville, McMin(n)ville, Elk River Bridge,Tray city (Tracy?) and Stevenson, Ala. At Battle Creek September 4th and Chickamauga September 19. Went to Knoxville under Burnside. Was in fights at Varwell's Station (there is a Vanwell up the railroad tracks from) and Dalton, Ga. Went back to Nashville w/ prisoners 11/26/64. Wounded at Guy's Gap and McMin(n)ville.

As I said, yours is the first reference to Battle Creek that would fit in the time frame. Thanks. The only other skirmish I'm having trouble with is Hollowville. It's not on maps, nor anything close. Any idea if a town changed it's name in the last 140 years?
