Thanks for your response Mr. Robbins. I agree with your premises regarding the relative likelihood of East Tennessee Men in both named units.

In my particular case, I know enough about the movements and livelihoods of my family to cast a great deal of doubt on the Claiborne County man being my man. One of the things that have made my research tough is just what you mentioned, that it is possible a Greene County man might have been in the named units.

I am requesting Sarah Miller's (Martin Van Buren's Mother) Southern Claims Commission file from the National Archives, and am hoping that will shed some light on Martin's Civil War-era activities.
