Re: Tennessee regiments, Shiloh

Greg --

Bob Bradley may have mentioned records of the state Adjutant General in Montgomery which include an extensive collection of receipts for arms and equipment issued to Alabama troops during the war. Many Alabama units that saw action at Shiloh are listed on that microfilm, including Alabama companies serving with Wirt Adams' cavalry.

It seems likely that similar records would exist for the State of Tennessee.

Nearly all arms issued to Alabama soldiers came from two sources -- State purchases following the Harpers Ferry Raid of October 1859, and inventory seized from the Federal armory at Mount Vernon AL. Southern governors probably continued purchasing arms from Northern agents right up until Fort Sumter.

For what it's worth, the small sample of receipts I've seen (about seventy covering the period May to October 1861) list flintlocks issued in small numbers to troops assigned to provost guard duty. We may assume these to have been part of the old inventory of state arms on hand at the time of the Harpers Ferry Raid.
