A typical Confederate company consisted of a Captain, 1st Lieutenant, 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd Lieutenant (Junior 2nd/Brevet 2nd Lieutenant), a First, Orderly Sergeant [O.S.], four duty Sergeants, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, four Corporals, 1st thru 4th, a Drummer and Fifer.

By contrast, the Union army had 8 Corporals.
