Re: Opinion on WBTS vs Civil War

Janelle --

I respect and promote the UDC (my wife joined to please me, as much as anything else), but disagree on this point. Webster defines civil war as "a war between opposing groups of citizens of the same country." Most of us understand and appreciate the point made by calling the conflict a "war between the states." However, Alabama never declared war on Indiana, and Massachusetts didn't declare war on South Carolina. Also, Confederates from Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland and other states had many opportunities to fight against 'home-made Yankees.' For that reason a better term might be, "War Within the States" or WWTS.

I prefer Southern names for CW battlefields (i.e., Murfreesboro rather than Stones River), but chose not to risk largely artificial and irrelevant conflicts over the very name of the war. We all cherish deeply-held personal convictions, but we value communication over partisanship on the state-based boards. IMHO Civil War is the better term for purposes of communication.

Jim Martin will prefer that we carry on non-state related discussions like this on the "News and Views" message board --
