Re: Adams Battery at Fort Donelson

Thanks,

I have both of the books from the VA regimental series pertaining to the Artillery units of Floyd during the West Va campaign. There are some inaccuracies in them, especially assumptions by the author pertaining to the battle of Fort Donelson and the size guns Adams had.

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that Captain Adams was not present during the move to Kentucky, and on top of that, several of the men died during the outbreak at Bowling Green.

I read in one account that French's Battery, during the battle, received two more guns and we believe these are them (Adam's Guns). Which makes sense why Adams is not listed anywhere in any of the histories of Fort Donelson and since French's battery came with Floyd.

The other thing is that we have found several 3-inch Archer bolts and shells in this area (especially where French's Battery was positioned) and Adams battery had a 3-inch rifle. Besides Grave's Battery, there is no other mention anywhere of any of the units having a rifled gun.
