Re: Adams Battery at Fort Donelson

I have the third battery your looking for sir.

From the book "A Guide To Virginia Military Organizations." 1861-1865, by Lee A. Wallace, Jr.

Page 23.

"Capt. Thomas E. Jackson's Co. Va. Horse Arty."

"Organized May 2nd, 1863, composed of some former members of Capt. Thomas E. Jackson's formerly Capt. John P. Hale's, Co. Va. Light Arty. (1st Organization), 1861-1862, broken up by its capture at Fort Donelson, Tenn., February 16th, 1862; recruits enlisted principally from the Virginia State Line, and transfers from other organizations, principally from the 8th Regt. Va. Cav.; served in Jenkins' Cav. Brigade, Lomax Horse Arty. Bn., and in P.P. Johnston's Horse Arty. Bn. in 1865."

So, the Va battery captured, was (at that time period) "Capt. John P. Hale's light artillery."

"1st Lt. John Guerrant's Col. Va. Light Arty."

"Goochland Light Artillery (also Goochland Artillery), Goochland County; formerly Capt. Johnathan Talley's Co. Va. Arty; formerly Capt. John Henry Guy's Co. Va. Arty; appears to have served as heavy, and also as light, artillery; enlisted June 6th, 1861, for one year; reorganized November 19th, 1862 as light artillery. Personal papers of Capt. Samuel H. Henry, 45th Regt.Va. Inf., show that this company was temporarily attached to that regiment during part of 1861; records show company was captured at Fort Donelson, Tenn., February 16th, 1862, and that the captain was declared exchanged November 10th, 1862. Captains: John H. Guy (dropped at reorganization), Jonathan Telley (Ret. December 14th, 1864, 1st Lt. John Guerrant."

"Cap. Stephen Adams' Co. Va. Light Arty."

"This company enlisted June 22nd, 1861, and was captured at Fort Donelson, Tenn., February 16th, 1862. After its exchange, the company was reorganized, August 24th, 1862, and was assigned September 1st, 1863, as Co. A, 30th Bn.
Va. Inf."

Lee A. Wallace Jr's book is a HUGE help on ALL Virginia Infantry regiments, battalions, companies, etc. Same as Artillery and Cavalry. Militia, Corps of Cadet's, Legions, medical organizations, Provisional Army of Virginia, Provisional Navy of Virginia, Local Defense Troops, all Va counties and what organizations came from each county, State Rangers, Home Guards, Virginia State Line, Reserves, etc.

What was most interesting (and to finally put to rest) on page 187....

"Jackson Bn."

Scott, Henry C., Maj., 1865

This battalion was organized by order of March 5th, 1865, from detailed men and others at the Jackson hospital, where Maj. Henry C. Scott was Acting Assistant Surgeon, 3rd Division. On the night of March 11th, Scott's battalion was sent to the front, where, he wrote, "my men acted with the utmost promptness and good will." One of Scott's companies was "composed entirely of Negroes, and a portion of this company was transferred to Maj. Jackson Chambliess' Negro Battalion." His command, two companies, was organized under the act of Congress, March 5th, 1865, and was part of the Negro brigade being raised by Majors James W. Pegram and Thomas P. Turner."

There is proof, that Negro companies fought at Petersburg. The North and South Magazine which claims "they never found one single African company" did not dig down enough. Does not surprise me, considering the magazine is Pro-Union. Keith Poulter, came out last year and said he was Pro-Union, something many of us knew 10 years ago.

I emailed him, several years ago on this, it was never published.

Well Sir, hope that helps you out!

Have a good morning,

Shawn Prouty
