Gene:

So glad to hear from you. My wife's family comes from Jackson County. I get up there about twice a year. Bruce Allardice, one of the most skillful researchers I know, has included some information on O. P. Hamilton in his recent book in Kentuckians in Gray. I have a few pages I garnered from the Tennessee State Archives. I'll send you copies if you will send me a snail mail address at waters.zack@gmail.com. As for his death, he was captured and in Federal custody. The official version is he was killed while trying to escape. He was probably murdered by the guards, which strange to say, was probably a blessing as he would have later been hung as a guerilla. There is a recent book on Champ Ferguson, called "Cumberland Blood," which has a few mentions of Hamilton. He occasionally rode with Ferguson and helped John Hunt Morgan too. Records also show his command at the Battle of Stones River. Let me know if I can be of further help. (My father-in-law was raised on Flynn's Creek, and Hamilton had a skirmish with the Yanks at nearby Flynn's Lick.) Zack
