I obtained from the National Archives a listing of all the Alexander Taylor's who served in the Confederate Army in TN. I was told by a county resource that since he was from this area that he probably trained at Camp Zollicoffer in Overton County. I want to make sure that I get the right unit for him. Are there any documents that I could obtain beyond the cards that are on microfilm at the National Archives? He died after the 1880 census so did not get to apply for a pension that I know of.
I know that he was not Alexander S. Taylor of Co E 7th Tn Inf because Alexander S. died of his wounds in 1862. He was not Alexander B. Taylor of Co G 2 (Robinsons's) Tenn Inf because the cards said this Alexander was 18 in 1861, my great grandfather was older at this time.
Footnote lists an Alexander Taylor in Co E, 1 Choctaw Mounted Rifles. In the National Archives, I also found an Alexander Taylor in Company A 28th Tenn Inf (2nd Mountain Regt Tenn Vols) who trained at Camp Zollicoffer in 1861. I also found an Alexander Taylor in Co H 29th Tenn Inf that was at Camp Cummings and in Knoxville.
Either the Alexander Taylor in Co A 28th Tenn Inf or Alexander Taylor in Co H 29th Tenn Inf could be my great grandfather. I suppose he could also have been the one in Co E 1 Choctaw Mounted Rifles. My thoughts are that he was the Alexander Taylor in Co H 29th Inf because that Alexander served in GA. I have heard family stories of a relative that served in the civil war and was in GA during the war. Please help with information on how I can sort this out to make sure I have his correct unit.
