William D. Patterson, Pvt., (2d) Company I, 5 Regiment Tennessee Infantry, Confederate, from Henry County, Tennessee, died April 20th, 1862 from a wound received at Shiloh on April 7th, 1862. William D. Patterson was the brother of my father's g-grandmother. Years ago my father, Elijah Charles Penick, (b. 1895) told me a Confederate soldier named R. P. "Pink" Kirby, also from Henry County, Tennessee, was wounded and taken to the Shiloh Church by William D. Patterson and that Kirby was the last person to see William D. Patterson alive. He related that he thought Kirby's leg was amputated.

Patterson's military papers record his death as stated above. On Page 154 of "History of Henry County [Tennessee} In The Confederate Army by Lt. Edwin H. Rennolds (1904) records "William D. Patterson; wounded at Shiloh (Colonel Venable dismounted and sent him to the rear on his horse)." Page 75 of this book records "R. P. Kirby fell with a broken ankle, causing the loss of his foot."

Please include William D. Patterson in your information.
