Hi! I am researching my GGrandfather Joseph Columbus Ray who was married to Nancy Cordelia Carter, daughter of
John Carter and Nancy Raspberry. Based on a lot of help from the Arkansas website, I now know that he was in the
6th Tennessee Regiment Cavalry, company L. He was born on September 17, 1843 in Pocahontas, Hardeman County, Tennessee. He died Jan. 28, 1931. His wife was born on August 24, 1863, in Pocahontas, Hardeman County, Tennessee and died on June 16, 1938. Their daughter Lottie Cordelia Ray Bravo is my Grandmother(deceased, but alive in my heart).
I know that she is buried in Royal Palms Cemetary in St. Pete, as well as her brother Jordan, and Nancy Cordelia Carter-which was amazing-since that was new! I know that Nancy Cordelia Carter and Joseph Ray were married on October 15, 1884, in McNairy County, Tennesse, which includes Hardeman, based on the Arkansas board. Nancy was Joseph's second wife and they had 9 children-I only know the names of Lottie(Grandma-born 1/27/06), Velma-born 1893 died 1943, and Jordan Ray-born July 2, 1899 died May 4, 1946
I have found what I believe to be a link to a Ray family website that shows the Ray Family probably started out in Orange County North Caroline. I am ordering Joseph's military file, but am really stumped because I can not figure out who his parents were. I also am not having any luck finding any info on Nancy's parents John Carter and Nancy Raspberry. She was also his second wife and I do not know the name of his 1st wife, or if they had children. I have found some slight
general info about The 6th Tennesse Regiment Cavalry-Union-Hurst's unit-enough to know they had quite a bad rep, but am trying to find more specific info linking my GG. Also I can not find where he is buried. And were all of the soldiers in Tennessee called Volunteers or just one side? I am sorry but the teacher in me can not be restrained! This side has really caught my attention since it seems like we are finally getting some info at last. I also really value this site and the Arkansas site since they seem to really enjoy helping people and stick to solid info, which I love. It is too easy to get caught up in a goose chase! Thanks! Tabitha Bravo Rogers
