McKneece conscripted as a Private in (2d) Company A, 1st Tennessee Regiment Heavy Artillery February 19, 1863, captured at Vicksburg July 4, 1863, refused to sign parole, sent to Memphis, Tenn. as a POW July 18,1863, thence to Gratiot Street Miiitary Prison, St. Louis, Mo. where he was forwarded on to the Camp Morton, Indiana prison camp August , here he enlisted in the 71st Indiana Volunteers, USA, August 1863
I cannot locate any information on the 71st Indiana other than this "At Camp Morton in June, [believe 1963] 50 Tennesseans enlisted in the 71st Indiana ..." [The Galvanized Yankees, Dee Brown, U. of Nebraska Press, 1963, p. 64]

Taylor's well researched tome "A Fit Representation of Pandemonium, East Tennessee Confederate Soldiers in the Campaign for Vicksburg, Mercer Univ. Press, Macon, Georgia 2008.
The 61st during the Vicksburg campaign was in BGen. John Crawford Vaughn's East Tennessee Brigade consisting of the 60th, 61st, and 62nd Tennessee Infantry Regiments.
