A number of men refused to sign their paroles because they did not want to return to the Southern ranks. Thus they were processed through the POW system and some of them joined Federal units and some of them remained in prison. Some were later released once the policy was established that allowed Confederate prisoners that swore allegience to the United States and remain north of the Ohio River for the remainder of the war.
