Thos. Alex. Ballard* enlisted as a Private in Company A, 9th Tennessee Infantry May 24, 1861 at Jackson, captured in Fayette/Haywood County, Tenn. November 29/30, 1863, sent to Alton, Illinois Prison Camp December 10, forwarded to Fort Deleware, Md. Prison Camp April 4, 1864, sent to City Point, Virginia for exchange February 27,1865, paroled at Brownsville, Tenn. May 31, 1865, his file contains handwritten notes at the Adjutant Generals Office, War Department, dated March 1, 1909 which would indicate some interaction with one of the state Confederate pension boards

Note: The regimental sketch found in John Berrien Lindsley's Military Annals of Tennessee records that he was killed at Shiloh

Private James A. Ballard, 25 years old Farmer, born in Jefferson County, Tenn. who enlisted November 1, 1862 at Knoxville, discharged because of disease February 18, 1863
