On the night of Jan. 4, 1865, combined guerilla forces of John Gatewood and Tom Polk Edmondson attacked a Union force at Lee and Gordon's Mill in Walker County, GA guarding a herd of cattle for the Federal army at Chattanooga. They made off with between 700-1,000 beeves, mules, and horse, and killed more than thirty Federal soldiers in the process. Which Union unit or units were guarding the cattle? I thought it might be the 5th Tennessee (U.S.) Mounted Infantry, but can find no verification of this. Any newspaper, letters, or other printed accounts of this action would be most helpful.
