Thanks. The Sixth Tennessee Mounted Infantry was only a guess (based upon statements when they surprised Gatewood later in McLemores Cove, that they had gotten a measure of "revenge" - and I did not see them fighting previously). I know the 44th and 42nd USCT were in Chattanooga, and the 42nd USCT tried to run the down, but could not catch them. If you run across anything on the unit that was guarding the cattle, it would be a big help. They would have likely lost about 40 men on the evening of Jan. 4, 1865. A newspaper report (CSA) says he killed 28 and captured 10, but their life expectancy was quite short I imagine - as Gatewood seldom kept prisoners (alive) long. Zack
