Does anyone know the correct full name of Col. J. G. Stcoks of the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, CSA? The only source that is the closest to a primary source is the book, "The Seventh Tennessee Cavalry (Confederate,) A History ," by J. P. Young, who was a member of the regiment. This book was orginally published in 1890 at Nashville, TN, when there were still plenty of veterans of the unit living. On page 194 of the book, which is in the section containing the roster of the regiment, Young gives his name as James G. Stocks. In the narrative he simply calls him J. G. Stcoks. I can locate no other period work by veterans that gives his name as anything more than J. G. Stocks.
Then we come to the two volume set of "Tennesseans in the Civil War," which was published in 1964. Volume 1, which covers the unit histories, in the section on the Seventh Tennessee Cavalry, CSA, on pages 68 and 69 calls him John G. Stocks. Volume 2, which is the listing of Tennessee soldiers, as per the Confederate and Union military records from the Government, gives his name as J. G. Stocks. So where did Volume 1 come up with his first name being John.
J. G. Stocks raised Company G of the Seventh before rising to Colonel of the regiment. A history of Company G of the Seventh, published in 1904, states that Capt. J. G. Stocks was from Memphis. I can locate no J. G. Stocks at all in Memphis or the rest of Tennessee in the 1860 Census. The only J. G. Stocks that I can locate anywhere in the Mississippi valley is a James G. Stocks living near the Mississippi River in Chicot County, Arkansas in 1860. Stocks is reported to have died during the war from some ailment after being medically discharged. I cannot locate the James G. Stocks from Arkansas anywhere in the 1870 or later census. So that seems to fit.

Would appreciate any help in verifying his true first name.
