Re: Col. J. G. Stocks, 7 TN Cav., CSA

Gay,

Thanks so much. Thie 1910 Texas Census proves that he is indeed James G. Stocks. It gives his birth place as Georgia and age as 81. The 1860 Census for Chicot County, Arkansas gives his name as James G. Stocks, birth place as Georgia and age as 32. So the regimental history written and published in 1890 by one of the other members of the regiment is correct in calling him James G. Stocks and the almost century after the War book calling him John G. Stocks is traditional secondary or worse work that was not thoroughly researched. This is much the problem with many of today's works that are not based on thorough scientifically based historial research techniques. I saw this in the University I attended working on my graduate degree. Many of the professors did not care about professional research techniques.

Thanks again so much for verifying that Col. Stocks was indeed named James G. Stocks.
