Re: What Happened To Co. N of the 64th NC, CSA?

Colonel Martin,
Thank you so much for the very informative reply. The info regarding Capt. Fitzgerald was very new to me. I have scoured "A Storm In The Mountains", and "Loyal Mountain Troopers", as well as Mr. Rigdon's "Historical Sketch & Roster of The 64th NC Infantry Regiment", in search of what may have befallen "Gramp Hamp's" Greene Co. TN Company "N" after that Oct '62 muster roll shown in his CMSR.

Regarding the "70" man outfit that Capt. Fitzgerald was seeking provisions for, I checked Volume IV of the "Roster of NC Troops In The War Between The States", and counted the men to see if "70" might have matched the number of troops in Co. N, and guess what - 69 troopers in Co. N including my Gramps and the Captain himself! (close enough)

The info on their Captain trying to get 13 bridles in Jan, and provisions in March of '63 for his 70 men, would seem to imdicate that Company N was not disbanded, and there is some evidence that they were known more by "Capt. Fitzgerald's Company" than as Company N. I will try and pursue some further info on this company by trying to run down the records of some of the other Co. N troopers, perhaps that will reveal something more.

I am much obliged indeed for your help and certainly welcome any advice you might have on further research.

May GOD Bless,

ROY
