Actually there's not....I spoke with several flag historians about these, and the consensus seems to be that although there are a number around, scattered throughout the country in various museums and historical societies, there is basically nothing written about them. I am in a research project dealing with patriotic small items, and ran across them that way....once I began a concerted effort to find out something, I began to find them mentioned in period diaries, newspapers, and diaries as well, just as you mention your family's was. It seems that the term "Bible Flag" is more of a modern term, used by some of the sellers, but I used it thinking that it might be the term some folks might know. In period literature, they are simply called "miniature"...or the size might not be mentioned, but you knew what they were talking about by the way they described them. Greg Biggs, calls them "personal flags", which is a far better description, since it truly does denote the connection between the soldiers and the homefront.

His description is somewhat ok, although they were NOT necessarily tucked into a soldier's Bible, as he says...they were, however, carried in pockets, haversacks, etc. They were made both North and South, although I have found more from the South.

Do you by any chance have your grandfather's letter? I'd love to include it in my information. And yes, from what you say I would believe that he received one of these miniature flags.....that was known to have been done in a number of cases, based on the primary source information I have found.
