There are a number of historical markers in the area, one, for example, for Leonidas Polk's home Rebel's Rest that burned in 1861. There is a historical marker on Highway 41A marking a skirmish Wheeler's Cavalry had with Federal forces on July 4, 1863, as it guarded the rear of the Army of Tennessee's retreat across the mountain. While the original was "damaged", there is a faithful reproduction hanging in Convocation Hall of the famous painting of Polk in his bishop's gown with a sword and general's uniform on the chair. You can see the site of the cornerstone of the University laid in October, 1860 which was destroyed by Federal forces in 1863. Until recently, the flag Polk's Corps flew at Shiloh was displayed in the basement of the library, but they've moved it to the University Archives.

Good luck, and enjoy your visit to the University.
