Re: 43rd Tennessee Regiment Company E

Charlotte,

Source: Compiled Service Record. Twenty-two year old Wilson Clepper enlisted at Rogersville, Tennessee on November 5, 1861 in Captain John W. Phillips' Company, Gillespie's Regiment Volunteers. He was originally the company Third Sergeant. If you look at the link below you will see where he would have stood in the regiment if they were in line of battle. This would not have been true if his company was acting as skirmishers. The formation would have been different.

He was elected as the Third Lieutenant on May 10, 1862. Brevet Second Lieutenant on a November 1862 regimental return. Killed on June 24, 1863.

Source: Travels of the 43rd Regiment Tennessee Volunteers: The Civil War Diary of Lieutenant I.J. Stamper. "Sunday, June 28th: 3rd Lieut. Culpepper, Co. E., killed in ditches. One Georgian killed and one wounded in the ditches occupied by Companies A and F. All hopes of relief are gone. Men are hungrey and worn out."

His regiment was in and around the location known as the Salient Work near Vicksburg.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
