Phillip,

Walker's Division was an all-Texas infantry division. I don't believe that Walker's Division was formed as early as 1862. I believe Walker had actually fougth in some early battles back east and was wounded. He was sent back to Texas to recover and to raise more troops . He raised what would become known as Walker's Texas Division. There are several good web sites that discuss Walker's Division at some length.
As far as General Wharton being there in late 1864, that makes sense. Wharton helped Lubbock and Terry raise the 8th Texas Cavalry Regiment , the famous "Terry's Texas Rangers" . After Terry's early death in battle , Wharton actually commanded the 8th Texas for a while . Later on he was promoted to Brigadier and then Major General of Cavalry brigades and later divisions in the Army of the Tennesse , and the Army of the Trans Mississippi. I believe he was in charge of the CSA cavalry forces in the Red River Campaign . After that campaign was over in May of '64, most Texas CSA troops shifted up into Arkansas; however, some of Wharton's Texas Cavalry Regiments( e.g. the 36th Texas Cav) returned to duty in east Texas until they were surrendered a year later . It is very likely that Major General Wharton was in the Nacogdoches County area of east Texas in November of 1864. It would be hard to say what other troops were actually in the area considering how beat up most of them were by this time . Many regiments were reduced to battalion size units by late '64.The web site for the 36th Texas Cav does say that they returned to east Texas at the conclusion of the Red River Campaign and they were part of Wharton's Cavalry Division. However, there were most likely other various mounted and dismounted units in the area besides the 36th. Hope this helps . Good luck .
