Re: Letter: Skirmish with 13th Texas Cavalry Batta

In 1862, James Valverde Pope January, a physician, helped raise a company of cavalry for Col. Edwin Waller's 13th Texas Cavalry Battalion at Victoria, Texas.

Captain J.V.P January and Co. A, Waller's 13th Texas Cavalry Battalion was suprised by federals and captured on Sept.9, 1862 at Bonnet Carre,LA. Capt. January was released soon afterwards and returned to Victoria, TX where he resigned his command and resumed his medical practice.

After losing horses, arms and equipment in the suprise attack in louisiana, Col. Waller's Battalion retreated into the swamps then continued partsian activity along the Mississippi River and joined Taylor's Division and fought as infantry in the Red River Campaign.

I makes you wonder how the South lost the war with fighting men like that from Texas.
