The region of the 2nd Frontier District that was patrolled by the Capt. Fossett's company of the Frontier Battalion, C.S.A. was south from Camp Colorado in Coleman County to Camp Collier in Brown County and north from Camp Colorado to old Fort Phantom Hill in Jones County, which was located about ten miles north of present day Abilene Texas. Capt.Fossett wouldnot have been involved in the battle of Dove Creek except for faulty intelligence. Maj. George B. Erath's 2nd frontier District headquarters in Gatesville was told it was a small Comanche raiding party. It turned out to be more than 3,500 migrating Kickapoo Indians armed with Springfield rifles.

As you can see, Capt.Fossett's 160 man company (actually two 80 man companies) stationed at Camp Colorado was spread rather thin to patrol over an area of about 14,000 sq. miles. However, the area was thinly populated by white settlers throughout the war and until the Indian menance was over in 1874.
