Re: trying to find info on CSA Texas Officer

Henry DeWolf was in the 4th Texas Cavalry,Arizona Brigade. The 4th Texas Cavalry was the brainchild of Spruce McCoy Baird, former attorney general of the New Mexico Territory.

The 4th Texas Cavalry was organized in February 1863. Headquarters was set up on the Pecos River in far west Texas and his recruiters signed up draft evaders, deserters, and other riff-raff who had drifted in to no-man's land between Confederate Texas and Union-held New Mexico. The regiment was not assigned to a specific brigade or division for most of the war, but rather was used as a sort of "mobile reserve" force. In early 1864,the regiment was sent to the lower Rio Grande, near Brownsville, Texas, where it was placed with a command called "The Cavalry of the West" under Colonel John Salmon "R.I.P." Ford. The 4th Regiment, then under the command of Lt.Col. Daniel Showalter, figured prominently in the lower Rio Grand Campaign.

In September 1864, the 4th Regiment was re-assigned again, this time to the 7th Texas Cavalry Brigade, Drayton's Cavalry Division, which was stationed in Cooke County in north Texas. By the beginning of 1865 the 4th Regiment was in a state of mutiny, and was little more than a disorganized mob. Many of the men of the 4th Texas cavalry roamed through north Texas committing robbery and murder.

The war ended with the rif-raff of the 4th Regiment being pursued through north Texas by other Confederate soldiers of the 7th Cavalry Brigade.
