Waul raised a "legion" and took it to Mississippi in the fall of 1862. The legion included an infantry regiment, and a cavalry contingent.

After the surrender of Vicksburg, the infantry of the legion reformed in Texas as Timmons' regiment, and served for the rest of the war on the Texas coast.

Waul ultimately became a brigade commander in Walker's Texas Division. The 22nd Texas was in Waul's brigade, not Waul's legion.
