Randy,

Believe it or not, there is a load of information on the 5th Texas Cavalry . I had an ancestor who served in the 5th and was KIA at Val Verde on February 21, 1862. The battle started on the 20th but really reached its climax on the 21st when Col Green's combined forces pushed the Federals back across the Rio Grande and into the confines of Fort Craig. Col Tom Green was the Commanding Officer of the 5th ; however, during the battle , the Commanding officer of the entire Brigade ( Brig Gen. Sibley) became ill and had to turn over the Brigade to Col Tom Green.

Your Lt Bass was most likely wounded at Val Verde and was placed in a makeshift hospital at Socorro, NM., just north of the Val Verdfe battlefield. There are several excellent diaries and other documents that testify to the excellent treatment the wounded CSA soldiers who were captured at Socorro received by the Federals. Many of the wounded singled out Union Col Canby's wife as being an angel of mercy in trying to do what ever she could to relieve their suffering. These men were captured because the main CSA army continued north to Albequerque (sp?) and on to Santa Fe and then to the Battle of Glorieta Pass. The CSA army had no way of taking the wounded along with them so as the Sibley brigade by passed Ft Craig , the CSA wounded were captued by the Federals in Ft CRaig.
I'll look in Hall's book tonight to see if I can find a reference to your man.
