John Ira Schumpert was a surgeon in the Confederate Army, and later a state legislator. His son, Dr Thomas Edgar Schumpert was the founder of Schumpert Sanitarium in Shreveport, later Schumpert Memorial Medical Center, and now Christus Schumpert Medical Center, one of the largest hospitals in the state. The younger Schumpert also owned one of the first automobiles in Shreveport. He died of tuberculosis in 1908. Father and son are interred in the family mausoleum at Greenwood cemetery in Shreveport.
