the state troops that took over as guards at Camp Ford got a pretty damming review from former Union prisoners. The original Confederate regulars were respected. The prisoners understood that there were general shortages in Texas for everyone. The state troops were accused of taking steps to harass the prisoners and mortality soared. I've always been surprised that Andersonville-type charges were not made about some of the administration at Camp Ford.
