Wells' Tx Commands, Pt III
In Response To: Re: Wells' Tx Commands, Pt III ()

David L. Haimerl,

Quoting:
The problem with the Confederate States Returns (CSRs) for Good's Battalion, except for a few individuals, is the only name appearing is the surname which makes it difficult to accurately identify the individual.

I ran into the same problem when I was transcribing Bourland's Border Regiment CSRs and THE BOURLAND PAPERS. I realized that in order to make sense out of that data, I would have to transcribe the records of all of the North Texas militias. Bourland was in Fort Worth one week, on the Louisiana line the next week, then at Fort Arbuckle another week, so the scope of my book was set. Six or seven years after I finished the transcriptions, I had a hard cover book in hand.

As I glanced through your listing, I recognized some of the soldiers and I feel that -- with about a week of study -- I can identify about one-fifth of the names. I think the secret is to learn the counties of residence. I feel that eventually at least one-third of the men in Wells' Command will be found in my book. I will try to help you as time permits.

My objective is to develop the Civil War era history of Southern Indian Territory, especially the Chickasaw Nation.

Jerry Coffee probably knows more about my book than anyone.
