Wells' Tx Commands, Pt III

David L. Haimerl,

Quoting:
... do you have any info on Harris' 1st Chickasaw Battalion in 1861/2 in general?

No, I don't have any more than what I have on my vIIpA-384 that was sent by one of my major contributors when I asked about the post commanders of Fort Cobb, Indian Territory:

"In October 1862, the command at Fort Cobb was passed on to the 1st Chickasaw Cavalry Battalion, under the command of Lt. Col. Joseph D. Harris and Major Lemuel M. Reynolds (both intermarried to Chickasaws). Companies under Harris’ command remained on duty at Fort Cobb until the end of the Civil War, which does not mean that Fort Cobb was occupied constantly by his men.

This outpost was abandoned and then reestablished at least twice by Harris. First he lost almost all of his Tonkawa, Caddo, and Waco Indian troops at that post in the Tonkawa Massacre on October 23, 1862. ... Secondly, his company that was stationed there at the beginning of Union Col. William A. Phillips' winter expedition in early February, 1864, was recalled and did not return until much later after Phillips’ withdrawal, and there were no troops posted there by the end of the war. But, the old fortification was still assigned to Harris' command.

It appears that Lt. Col. Martin Shecoe’s First Chickasaw Battalion was posted at various times at Ft. Cobb and Ft. Arbuckle during the last two years of the Civil War."
