Camp Locke was located on private property in northern Van Zandt County, one mile southeast of State Highway 47 and the spillway of Lake Tawakoni. Take SH-47 northeast from Wills Point Texas for about 12 miles and the camp was one mile southeast. Goose Lake is also in the same location. Goose Lake is a natural body of water which was once a river channel of the Sabine River.

Col. Locke lived in what is now Camp County, in the community of Lafayette, southeast of Pittsburg,Texas. Camp County was part of Upshur County until 1874. Camp Locke was named in honor of Col. Locke. However, from June until October 1861, most of Col. Locke's 10th Texas Cavalry underwent recruit training at Camp Tally, which was one of the first eleven Confederate training camps established by Gov. Clark in 1860. Each of the training camps was to train 1,000 recruits or one regiment of cavalry or infantry. Camp Tally was located at Coffeeville, Texas in northeast Upshur County. The recruit training camps named in honor of Confederate officers were established later in the war.
