Don,

I just learned something interesting about some CSA MDs. At leasr in Gen Joe Wheeler's CSA Cavalry iutfit, there were several medical doctors who were privates!! So, maybe that Henry Dye was your man . I had assummed that all medical doctors were either officers or civilians . Looks like I missed that one ! However, I never really spent too much time chasing down the medical types , eventhough that is where I served for 26 years in the US Navy ( enlisted Hospital Corps and as an officer in the Medical Service Corps). I just never had an interest in that area of the war . I think most of my folks used an "X" to sign most papers ; however, I hear that they could ride and shoot pretty well and I guess the whole point was to make the Yankee doctors have to work harder than your ancestor had to ( forgive the attempt at humor ). So you might want to the National Park Service CW Soldiers and Sailors System ( see my earlier comments to others at this Board on how to get there ) and then see where Pvt Henry Dye's records are stored and see if that is your man . I think I saw Pvt Dye with the 11th Texas . Also, if you haven't done so yet, go to the Texas History site where you can scan for who filed an application for a Confederate Pension. Those applications contained a good bit of information . Plus , I still think you will get a response from our Arkansas bretheren on their CW Board if you make a similar inquirey about the CSA hospitals at Little Rock and Camden. You also might luck out on this Board with someone who really tracks Texas CSA "docs" . Good Luck, CAM
