Don,

You're going to have to "back into it" by going this route: go to the website www.itd.nps.gov
This will give you the revised and latest vesrsion of the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System . Once you ge that web site, click on soldiers . You will be given a screen with a bunch of blanks for you to fill in. Put in the blanks as appropriate Henry Dye , Texas , Confederate , Cavalry . Don't worry about filling in the unit name or number. Once you hit submit query his name should pop up as belonging to Morgan's Texas Cavalry. Then you can click on Morgan's Cvalry and you be will given a page that says that they dont' have a history for Morgan's Cavalry ; however, if you want to see a list of members of the unit click on a certain line. At that point , you will be given list of soldiers ( 20 at a time ) in alphabetical order. You scroll down to the end of the first page and click on the listing for the next 20 . You have to do that until your man's name appears.

Now , I'm just an Oklahoma country boy and maybe a little slow. So, if you can find a faster way to get to the "Ds" , by all means use it and then tell me , please.
Also, if you try to go straight to Morgan's Texas Cavalry on the "Regiment" funtion on the NPS CWSSS web site , it will tell you there is "no such unit" . However, if you will follow my convoluted instructions by going through the "Soldiers" funtion ( fill in the blanks) , I believe you'll find one Henry Dye of Morgan's Cavalry.
Now I'm not complaining !!!; this NPS CW S&S System is so vastly superior to what we had before , there is no comparison.

As far as Morgan's Cavalry being linked to Alf Johson's "Spy Company" , that is what BG Wright/Col Simpsnon say in " Texas in the War" . Sifakis ( the other guy I rely on frequently) doesn't mention the link . It looks like Morgan's Battalion started out consisting of several companies , including Alf Johnson's Spy Company . The Battalion did not become a regiment until March 1865. The new regiment was never fully recognized by the Richmond government and the officers of the "regiment" were never recognized as such or formally promoted to their regimental ranks . Of course , the Richmond government had a little distraction going on in March 1865 , like the impending fall of Petersburg and the ultimate evacuation of Richmond . So, I think it is fair to say that the CSA War Department was a little preoccupied in March of 1865 and one of the last things on their mind was formally recognizing a mounted unit in the "remote wilds of Texas" . Good Hunting, CAM
