About 1836, B.W. Hooks established a plantation in Bowie County, thirteen miles west of present day Texarkana. The community of Hooks,Texas was established near the old plantation.

About 1874, Hooks opened a post office at Hooks Ferry in Red River County, just east of Kiometia, Texas. The post office closed in 1902.
