Re: Flags carried by troops in I.T.

Dear Greg,

I'm gonna butt in here and answer this question. The battle of Honey Springs (Elk Creek), I.T. was fought July 17, 1863 near modern-day Rentiesville, OK between the Union forces of William G. Blunt and the Confederate forces of Douglas H. Hancock.

The Order of Battle for this engagement was:

UNION FORCES

Army of the Frontier

1st Division - Brigadier General James G. Blunt

1st Brigade - Colonel William R. Judson
2nd Indian Home Guard --- Lieutenant Colonel Fred W. Schaurte
1st Kansas Colored Infantry--- Colonel James M. Williams (W) Lieutenant Colonel John Bowles
6 Companies, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry --- Captain Edward R. Stevens

2nd Brigade - Colonel William Phillips
2nd Colorado Infantry (6 Companies)--- Colonel Theodore H. Dodd
1st Indian Home Guard --- Colonel Stephen H. Wattles
Detachments of 6th Kansas Cavalry* --- Colonel William F. Campbell
Artillery
2nd Kansas Light Artillery
1st Section --- Captain Edward Smith
2nd Section --- Lieutenant John P. Grassberger
3rd Kansas Light Artillery* --- Captain Henry Hopkins

CONFEDERATE FORCES

BRIGADIER GENERAL DOUGLAS HANCOCK COOPER

Texas Troops - Colonel Thomas Coker Bass
20th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted) --- Colonel Thomas Coker Bass
29th Texas Cavalry - Colonel Charles DeMorse (W)
5th Texas Partisan Rangers--- Colonel Leonidas M. Martin

Indian Troops - Brigadier General Douglas Hancock Cooper
1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles --- Major Joseph F. Thompson
2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles --- Lieutenant Colonel James M. Bell
1st Choctaw & Chickasaw Mounted Rifles --- Colonel Tandy Walker
1st Creek --- Colonel Daniel N. McIntosh
2nd Creek--- Colonel Chilly McIntosh

Artillery
Lee's Battery--- Captain Roswell W. Lee

Unattached Units

Scanland's Squadron Texas Cavalry --- Captain John Scanland
Gillett's Squadron Texas Cavalry --- Captain L. E. Gillett

In addition to Ralph's query regarding the flags of the Texas troops, I'd also like to know of examples or information regarding the flags of the Indian Troops both Union and Confederate. I've never seen any reference to regimental flags or national flags existing or described of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Indian Home Guard Regiments. Also, the flag of the "Cherokee Braves" or Watie's 1st Cherokee Mounted Volunteers is widely known; however, according to the OR's this flag was an adaptation of a flag carried by the other four tribes (Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole). This OR description states that when the Cherokee finally and officially joined the other Confederate allied tribes they were presented with a special flag which included four stars set in a square pattern in the field of the flag with a special fifth star placed in the center to represent the Cherokee. I'd like to know about these other flags which apparently were of the "Stars and Bars Pattern" (1st National) with four stars rather than five. Do any of these flags still exist and, if not, is there any info as to what happened to them?

Jim
