Born on Mar. 22, 1824, W. H. C. Whiting was only five years old when Lee graduated from the U. S. Military Academy, class of 1829. Charles Mason of New York graduated at the top of Lee's class.

The 18^th Texas Cavalry Regiment surrendered with the garrison of Arkansas Post. The 18^th Texas Infantry Regiment formed part of the relief force which arrived too late to be of any assistance.
