A Marylander in the 2nd Texas Infantry?!?

Hello all,
One of my gr gr grandfathers was Dr. Alexius Llewellyn Middleton and he, like many Marylanders, served in the Confederate Arms. But you want to hear something odd? He, from Charles and Pr. Georges Counties, Md, was an Asst-Surg with the 2nd Texas Volunteers in the Trans-Miss Dept.. Now what in the world was he, a Marylander, doing way down there?!? I figure he was just sent where he was needed or perhaps he was visiting and traveling when the war started and got caught up in the war (I think he graduated from Med school in like 1860). I do know this. When he got home after the war he lost interest in the medical profession and devoted his time more and more to farming, which is something he loved. Around 1900 he owned 1600 acres on the border along Mattawoman Creek between Charles and Pr. Georges Counties. Two things might have affected his decision to get out of medicine. I was told he never was the same after the war and also never the same after his kid sister, whom he was very close to, died at the age of 18. Perhaps he just got disalusioned with the medical profession due to all that. But from other things I have heard, I think even though he farmed later in life he was still a country doctor for the locals. Just a bit of interesting history there.

But anyone have any ideas or opinion as to how he, a Marylander, wound up serving with the 2nd Texas Infantry in the Trans-Mississippi Dept? Also, I know that an Asst-Surgeon held the rank of either Lieutenant or Captain. I wonder what he was? I also wonder if he wore some sort of uniform he was issued or picked up in the Trans-Miss Dept or since he was from a blue blood Maryland family, "Landed Gentry", did he just have one made and sent to him or have one made for him down "Texas way"? Just curious about that.
Take care,
