The use of "brigade" with a number often means Texas State Troops. Where was your ancestor living at the time of the war? From a quick look it appears that the 11th Brigade was pulled from the Anderson/Trinity/Hunt county areas, just going by the list on http://www.texasranger.org/ReCenter/Captains.pdf.
