36th Texas Cavalry

I am trying to figure out what happened to the 157 men who deserted on Feb. 2 1864 in protest over becoming dismounted cavalry just prior to being sent to Louisiana. My GG grandfather, James West, Co. K, was among the deserters and his service file stops there. I have reason to believe that he returned but have no proof. I know Texas Ranger Daniel Roberts deserted at the same time from the same company and his service file ends there, but I can find no info for any continued service for him either. I hoped Roberts, being somewhat well known as a Ranger, would be easier to trail, but there is nothing about his service beyond mention of the desertion. I can only assume that not all of the 157 men refused to return. Does any one know anything about this mass desertion
