"Capt. Pope's Squadron"

Am researching for a book on John P. Gatewood, a Confederate guerilla in NE Alabama, NW Georgia, and East Tennessee. There are constant references to a Captain Pope who led a "Squadron of Texas Rangers" in Gatewood's unit. Does anyone have information on Captain Pope and his Texans? I wonder if it might be William Harrison Pope, postwar attorney and politician. His war record (that I have found) is pretty sketchy, so he may have been with Gatewood's Scouts.

Also, most of the Gatewood family moved to Texas postwar. John P. Gatewood married a girl near Tyler (Mary Amelia Shumate), had a daughter, and then disappears by 1875. We would love to find out what finally became of him (where and how he died). Several stories state that Pinkerton detectives and bounty hunters were hunting him (hired by his wartime victims in the East), so he likely kept a low profile. Thank you for your help. Zack
